Henry Ford founded the Ford Motor Company on June 16, 1903. He was a visionary entrepreneur who revolutionized the automotive industry with his innovative manufacturing techniques and the introduction of the affordable Model T.

Early Developments and Assembly Line

Henry Ford constructed his initial experimental vehicle in a workshop behind his Detroit residence in 1896. Following the establishment of the Ford Motor Company, the inaugural Ford car, known as the original Model A, was manufactured at the Mack Avenue plant in July 1903.

Five years later, in 1908, the remarkable Model T was introduced, captivating the market with its immense success. The demand for this vehicle was so overwhelming that Ford devised innovative mass production methods to ensure its efficient manufacture in bulk. Notable milestones followed suit. In 1911, the first U.S. branch assembly plant was established in Kansas City, Missouri, while the company’s inaugural overseas production plant emerged in Manchester, England.

Ford’s groundbreaking achievement occurred in 1913 with the introduction of the world’s first moving assembly line for cars. With the advent of assembly-line manufacture, the price of the touring-car variant of the Model T dropped from $850 in 1908 (about 18 months’ salary for the average worker) to less than $300 in 1925 (roughly four months’ salary).

World War I

Ford, like many other automakers, felt the effects of the war. In 1915, Henry Ford and other pacifists traveled to Europe on a peace mission to try and prevent World War One. As a result, Henry Ford gained considerable notoriety.

Henry Ford was initially a pacifist, but he came around to supporting the war effort. The Model T was the basis for many Allied combat vehicles (including the 1916 ambulance and the Ford 3-Ton M1918 tank).

Ford in the 21st Century

The Ford GT and other Centennial editions of Ford automobiles were released to celebrate the company’s 100th anniversary. The Ford Escape, introduced in 2004, was the first SUV to combine gasoline and electricity. In 2005, Ford gave the Mustang a new style evocative of the cars from the 1960s.

Ford sold Aston Martin in 2007, then in 2008, it sold Jaguar and Land Rover to Tata Motors. Ford reported $12.7 billion in losses for 2006.

Present Day Ford

Ford released the sixth generation of the Mustang to mark the car’s 50th year of manufacturing in 2014. The 2012 Detroit Auto Show marked the debut of the fourth-generation Ford Mondeo. This marked the first time since the CDW27 first generation of the Mondeo in 1994 that Ford’s mid-size platform in Europe and North America had been brought together.

Ford declared in 2018 that it would no longer produce passenger automobiles except the Mustang and the Ford Focus Active. Instead, Ford concentrated on trucks, SUVs, and crossovers because these models were the most popular in the U.S. in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
