The Best Muscle Cars of All time

Updated: May 22, 2024

American muscle cars are unlike anything else in the automotive world in terms of both sheer performance and style. Compared to other classic designs, you can rest assured that the best-looking muscle cars back up their bark with plenty of bite.

LaFontaine Classic Cars has been collecting and trading the coolest muscle cars throughout the country for almost a quarter-century, and we’re here with our shorthand list of the finest examples of American automotive grit.

Our Top 6 Picks for The Best Classic Muscle Cars

There’s something deeply humbling about how classics generate lasting appeal and continue to influence new generations. While our favorite muscle cars are prone to change, the following are some of our most consistent top picks.

1969 Ford Mustang Mach 1

Five years after its unveiling at the World Fair, the Ford Mustang most profoundly hit its mark with the 1969 Mustang Mach 1, when Ford moved away from the original GT moniker. The Mach 1’s Cobra Jet V8 reached unheard-of horsepower for its time, and we’ve acquired refurbished models that exceed the four-digit mark.

A true king of the road, the Mach 1 boldly extended its drag racing roots firmly onto the American streets – and the rest is history.

1969 Chevy Camaro Yenko 427

The best muscle cars of all time are known for feel and sound alike. A well-preserved ’69 Chevy Camaro Yenko edition delivers a deep, growling rumble that lets you know you’re contending with a true beast of the streets. Based on the wildly successful Camaro ZL-1, legendary gearhead Don Yenko’s modifications transformed the already iconic American muscle cars into something of a collector’s holy grail.

1949 Oldsmobile Rocket 88

Don’t let its antique status fool you – the 1949 Oldsmobile Rocket 88 was the first compact car to sport a V8. Hence, many collectors credit it as the very first muscle car. Its combined power and lighter weight propelled it to a half-dozen NASCAR championships in its first year alone. More importantly, the Rocket 88 marked a turning point in American automotive history, as it influenced automotive designs for commercial markets.

1964 Pontiac GTO Tri-Power

Regarding mass accessibility, Pontiac’s original GTO is also considered one of the earliest American muscle cars. The 1964 GTO Tri-Power was also a force to be reckoned with. Its triple intake/carburetor was no gimmick, shaving a full second off the original GTO’s 0–60 MPH tests (and making it one of the coolest-looking muscle cars even under the hood).

1965 Shelby G.T.350R Fastback

The Shelby G.T.350R Fastback proves some of the best classic muscle cars are inextricably rooted in racing performance. Shelby’s contribution to muscle car supremacy was fully compliant with Sports Club of America (SCCA) standards – hence the “R,” shorthand for “Race Spec.” To prove it, the 1968 edition went on to win more SCCA races than any other car (32 of 54).

1992 Dodge Viper RT/10

While clearly at the young end of automotive classics, we’re taking “best muscle cars of all time” literally. The original Viper reclaimed Dodge’s glory as an indispensable player in muscle car history (vis a vis the 1966 Charger, to say the least).

The Viper RT/10 also shows that American muscle cars aren’t restricted to a certain period. The first wave of Vipers was almost excessive in their might, featuring no traction control, ABS, or even airbags. No guts, no glory.
